Wanted: your suggestions, gifts for librarians and archivists

It’s that time again…. The time when we come to you and ask, “What is the perfect gift to give the librarians and archivists in your life?” What have you had your eye on? What are you planning on giving, or hope to receive?

Leave your suggestions in the comments and we will share our compiled “best of” list next week!

(If you can’t wait or are looking for ideas, please check out our lists from 2014 and 2015.)

  1. There are a number of great library-related jigsaw puzzles, including Anatolian’s 1000 piece Library, Cobble Hills’s 1000 piece Library cat, Blue Opal’s 1000 piece An appetite for books, Hey’s 1500 piece Igor Kravarik books and Ravensburger’s 2000 piece World of books.

  2. How can you go wrong with a laureate? Bob Dylan: The Lyrics 1961-2012 includes the full range of his Homeric talents. This edition, the third packaging of his complete lyrics, includes annotations to perhaps support Dylanologistic attempts to parse his most ambitious and disturbing visions (“The motorcycle black Madonna / Two-wheeled gypsy queen / And her silver-studded phantom cause / The gray flannel dwarf to scream”) and the less so… (“Shake it up baby, twist and shout / You know what it’s all about / What are you doing out there in the sun anyway? / Don’t you know, the sun can burn your brains right out”).

  3. Some homemade cookies, or a bottle of something, with a little note attached that says “I made a donation in your name to save public libraries.”

2016 has left many of us feeling bereft. Supporting public information access through public libraries, fending off threats to public library funding anywhere in the United States makes a great gift!

  4. For those who have been more than 20 years of working in libraries all over the world; I suppose it will be justified to get them A CERTIFICATE OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT from the HIGHEST OFFICES of international organisations.

  5. A functional time machine.

    Possible uses by an archivist:
    * Clear the backlog without requesting additional staff … just keep going back to where things started to build up and help yourself process things then.
    * Go back to the point in time when a collection that should never have been accessioned to intervene.
    * Go back to the visit the records creator and ask them all those questions that you just have to guess now.

A nice stocking stuffer to accompany would be a guide to avoiding paradoxes in time travel.

  6. Levenger Circa note-taking/organizing system. Many different styles, expandable, customizable.

  7. I am a fan of novelty measuring tapes. They are useful in the stacks and moving around and you can find some really cute ones. I have a cat measuring tape I received as a gift and I bought a friend one with a giraffe.
